Update of a Work in Progress.

I painted this first one when I felt guilty and rather discordant inside. There is a distinct style that was emerging from it.

And this is the painting as of tonight. More rendered and dimensional. I want to put back some of the colors into it.

Painting In Progress: a Still Life of Bottles in Acrylics

So, here's a fun piece I'm working on. I've laid the bottles out in blues, and don't know if they will stay that way. I will probably use a retarder medium later for blending help.

I don't know how photo-realistic I will make it, because it looks kinda cool the way it is.

En Plein Air Painting At Kalamazoo Farmer's Market

 It was a little busier than I thought when I got there at 8:30. I stayed for two hours.

 Thanks to Scobey's Produce for letting me steal a spot to paint in. I did this little 8"x10" for them as a thank you gift.

Here I'm letting some palettes dry before I pack up, and getting the WIP dried up too.

Here's a view of my spot. I didn't end up using this canvas though. Not yet anyway.

Entering Art Prize a Possibility

This is just here to be pretty.

I've been thinking about entering Art Prize this year. I had an idea for something to go on or hang from a type of room divider, like a stained glass mosaic made with resin, but each piece being a part of a photo-essay or something.

Acrylic Painting Process and Work in Progress

Still life. The staple of classical painting exercises.  Bottles and grapes being some of the most cliche and yet the simplicity of the forms still tempts the painter's eye. And I have lots of bottles and fake grapes hanging around for just such a purpose.

I don't know if I will make a lighter colored background or not, I like painting on gold usually, but this lighter scheme is nice too.


First, I set up my stuff with white canvases as a photo-booth like i usually do, and took a picture.



Then I desaturated the picture and took the color out of it, partially to see the values more clearly, and partly because I have no color ink.

I drew a grid on the black and white print out, dividing it in half about two or three times. Then I taped string across the canvas in the same pattern to transfer the picture. I used charcoal, and wish I had taken a picture of that process, but didn't know if I was going to blog it or not.



Here is what I have so far! It's on a gold ground, of course.

Creature Making Inspiration

Its hard to define the kinds of creatures I want to make, but done of the first steps that I can do it find things like it.
I have quite a bit of random materials, and would love to populate a craft booth with creatures like these.

1. There will be a live painting projected onto the side of a building A wall, possibly. It's rather rainy.  Well, it's looking more like a wall inside the building. But come on, that's cool.

No, I don't know what I'm painting yet. So far there have been lots of landscapes.

2. There will be a drawing for free art.

 The rules: You must have a ticket. The tickets are free. Only one ticket per person. You must be present at the time of the drawing. You must tear off the portion of your ticket with the number and put it in the box provided.The drawing takes place at 7:oo pm.

     I will post pictures of things you might win soon, and locations to find tickets in advance. You will also be able to get tickets at the door.  There will be an estimated worth of $150 of art given away, from ACEOs, 8"x10" to 18"x24" or larger. 

3. There will be food. 

No, I don't know what yet. No alcohol though.

4. There is a coupon for 30% off one painting hidden in one of my blog posts.

Creating Texture On Canvas

 I love texture! This was done for a class, and with my very first hand stretched canvas, so it's kinda wobbly in the frame. Can you guess what I used to texture it? You can stick almost anything to a ground with gesso, except sugary things, which dissolve. Through bad storage some of the lentils have fallen off too. But it was fun! Everyone wants to touch it. I think it's 16"x20", 2009

Old Acrylic Painting I Did

This now hangs on my brother's living room wall. I didn't know what to do with it, and I didn't want to store it, so I gave it to him as a gift for helping me move. His roommates like it too!

I think I did it in 2010 or 2009. Acrylic, 18"x24" or possibly 16"x20" since I did it for a class and the standard required canvas size was 16"x20". I've learned a lot about perspective since then!

When I painted the city on the right, I was listening to a History channel documentary about Hitler, and those buildings will always remind me of that!
I was also living at home, and we didn't have much room. I used a milk crate on top of books on an upside-down chair balanced on a chair to make an easel. Some of the books never recovered.
